Kathleen had her first taste of rice cereal and bananas this weekend. Neither experience was an unqualified success . . . but it was funny.
We started with cereal and formula on Saturday. We mixed the cereal, set her up in a high chair, tied her biggest bib around her, and set to changing our little girl’s world forever. As she was happily pounding her keys on the tray, I dipped a bit of thinned cereal on my finger where upon she grabbed it and put it in her mouth (at this age, if it’s in her hand, it’s in her mouth). She made a face. I used the spoon to scoop a little more out of the cup and popped it in her unsuspecting mouth. This time, she stopped pounding, looked at me with an open mouth and disgusted expression as if to say, “What are you doing to me, woman?” She smacked her lips, spitting most of the mouthful of cereal on to her chin. Some of it may have gone down her throat, but I can’t be sure. I snuck in another spoonful when she wasn’t looking. This time she stopped moving completely. She looked straight ahead, mouth agape, disbelief painted across her face. I’d done it again. I put this – stuff – in her mouth after she had clearly delivered a message that she did not appreciate the last spoonful.
After this, we took a break. I tried to get a few more spoonfuls, but she refused to open her mouth. Clear signal to mom that she was done. She took the partially filled spoon, banged it on the tray a few times, and hid it in her lap.
Sunday’s bananas were marginally more successful. Marginally. I managed to get a few more spoonfuls in her mouth before she gave me the disgusted look and clamped her mouth shut. Most of the banana ended up on her chin, on the tray, in her hair, and in her lap, but I think a few minute dregs slip down her throat before she could spit it all out of her mouth.
This evening: rice cereal with bananas!
And then a bath.

So cute! Dominic still isn't very good with his solids, but my ped told me that 3 bites was the goal. So that's my goal! But it's a lot of prep and cleaning for 3 bites, right?!
That's no joke. Well, it's good to know that Kate isn't the only fussy one. I realize it's only been two days, but I was getting worried. I can envision her refusing solids through her first birthday.
