I love my girls, Sadie and Muggles, and would do anything to keep them safe and happy; but there wasn't much I could do for my little pup this weekend. From Friday through Sunday evening, she spent the bulk of her time hiding in any available, quiet corner or following us around the house with her tail between her legs. If she wasn't under the bed, she was under our feet . . . literally. Our girl is petrified of fire crackers, and we were surrounded.
Ever since her first July 4th years ago, Sadie has trembled at the sound of fireworks. There's no reason for her to be afraid - she's never been hurt or threatened by them - but she'll start trembling at the first snap, crackle, or pop and make a beeline indoors. All we can do for her is close the windows in the bedroom and let her crawl under the bed. It's the only place where she's not panting with fear.
Strangely, our cat Muggles wasn't fazed. You'd think that being a cat - and, ergo, skittish - she'd be cowering under the bed with Sadie. Instead, she made herself comfortable on the ottoman in front of the open window in the computer room (we spoil our girls with their own, private window perch) and attempted to determine where all the noise was coming from. I suspect she was also looking for signs of the neighbor's interloping cat. He, an unneutered tom, is her arch nemesis . . . as is every other cat in the neighborhood (she's not a cat's cat). We found the two of them earlier in the weekend hanging on the either side of the window screen, yowling like banshees, and making every attempt to rip each other apart. I'm happy to say that the only thing they ripped apart was the screen.
Now that the holiday weekend is over, Sadie and Muggles can find some peace. Maybe our puppy will even let us walk her around the block. Muggles, I'm sure, will continue her vigilant search for the territorial tom. He's a good boy - very friendly - but it's her house and her yard and and she won't hear anything more of the matter.
I love my girls.

My cat wasn't fazed by the fireworks either...at first he puffed up a little but then relaxed and sat by the window. My cat likes other cats...he purrs when he sees one and watches it. Sometimes he rubs up against me when a "friend" is out by our house. I bet he was raised with other cats. We thought about getting another cat for him to play with but since he has that kitty disease (Koron.a)...that is out of the picture. That disease is spreadable from one cat to another only. A cute short story..one night a stray cat was howling by my cat's bedroom window (he has his own room) and my cat started banging on his door (we close it so he'll leave us alone at night). Banging and meowing...being a good cat mom I got up and opened the door. My cat jumped into my arms...all puffy furred and scared. I had to laugh. I held him for a bit and took him by the living room window so I could see where the other cat was. He was sitting on our driveway. Once the stray left..my cat settled and went back to bed. He didn't hiss or anything...just seemed a little afraid of the cat. Animals...of course,dh slept through all of the rucus and when I told him about it he called me silly for getting up and letting the cat out. Whatever!
Cats are nuts. :) My cat would be a puff of fur too if she saw a strange cat in her vicinity, but for entirely different reasons. Poor boy, getting concerned about that other cat. He sounds like a wonderful little thing.
