Toddler obsessions

Door handles? How could I forget door handles? Kathleen’s figured out how they work – the lever type, anyway. She opened and closed doors all weekend just so she could play with the handles. We need to keep the garage door locked now (thank goodness she hasn’t figured out locks, yet). The outside doors need to be locked, too, come to that, but we’re in that habit of locking them automatically. The garage door will be a challenge to remember: I’m in and out constantly when I’m cooking.

I do think she’s grown since her last pediatrician appointment. I don’t remember her being able to reach the door handles before. And her 18-month pants look shorter, especially the jeans. She does have a pair of longer 18-month jeans I can start putting on her more frequently, but they’re wider than the others and tend to slide down (although how anything can get past that puffy diaper is beyond me). I wonder how her 24-month jeans will fit? We’ll need to give those a try.

Her book obsession continues. Miss Mae, her daycare teacher, pointed out all the books scattered about the room when I picked baby girl up yesterday. There must have been at least a dozen. They were all from Kathleen. After she pages through one, she drops it wherever she is and goes back for another. In fact, when I arrived yesterday, she was sitting in the book bin with one of her classmates. I wish I’d had a camera, because it was the cutest thing. The little boy looked so proud of himself. Kathleen was complaining because she couldn’t get out.

Miss Mae is trying to teach her to put one book back before she brings her another with partial success. I tried getting her to do that at home last night, but she looked at me as if I were mildly insane before she toddled down the hall to her room for another book. This morning, however, she did it without being asked. Of course, we were at daycare. I wonder if it's the setting?
