9/11

I was just thinking about 9/11. I can't believe it's been 8 years already. I remember the day that it all happened. I had only be working in my current department for less than a month. When I got in, my cowoker had the radio on with news that a plane had hit one of the towers. Little did I know then that it wasn't the little single engine plane I was picturing and it wasn't an accident. We were glued to the radio all morning. About noon, we were dismissed. Working in the Capitol Complex, they were concerned that there would be bomb threats in the area (there actually was one a few days later).

I tried to call my brother early on. He works in NYC. He hadn't called and no one could get through to him. I was happy to learn the next day that he had never made it into work. Thank Heavens! He regularly took the subway in along a route that passed under the two towers. He still remembers looking back towards the towers from the station and seeing the first one collapse.

My most vivid memory of that day was seeing the images of people jumping from the towers. What a horrible decision to have to make. What could ever make a person choose jumping a hundred stories as a better alternative? Those poor people. And their families.

I just got an email from my brother. He and his partner have just started a blog out their house in upstate NY. :) http://gobblehill.blogspot.com/
