Thinking Spring

I love spring. I love spring-like weather. I love spring-like weather after several feet of snow. And I truly love watching that spring-like weather melt all that snow into nothing in front of my eyes. Bliss.

It's amazing what I'm finding now that the snow is nearly gone. The crocuses are blooming in the front garden and look beautiful. Daffodil sprouts are poking through the moist dirt on the hill in the tree line. The pansies are still blooming, in spite of the weight of the snow and several weeks of no light. It's all so incredible. I absolutely adore Spring.

It's too bad it will all be temporarily ruined next week when Daylight Savings time rolls around. That I do not adore in the least bit. Well, not for several weeks, anyway. It takes me a little time to get used to it. After that, it's not so bad.

I'm about ready to start planting some seeds. I have tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, bell and jalapeno peppers, red beets, some herbs, and several varieties of marigolds. Most everything did well last year except the tomatoes. The moment any started to ripen, they'd develop some sort of rot. I suppose it was the tomato blight which plagued so many people. I usually prefer heirlooms, but not this year. I'll try a few hybrid varieties resistant to rot and we'll see what happens. I truly miss fresh garden tomatoes in my salad last year.

I love spring too! We planted our first garden last spring and it turned out lovely, except for the tomatoes, like you. I wonder if there's a way to prevent that?!

I think those who planted hybrids resistant to blight had fewer problems with rotting tomatoes. I have no idea how long blight remains active in the soil, or even if it does, but I'll try hybrids and one heirloom this year to see what happens.

Wow. I'm in awe. I plant nothing but annuals :)
