Heat Wave

It is hot. We’re having a heat wave, the official start of which was July 4, but in my opinion, it was plenty hot on July 3, as well. Highs in the upper 90s and even 100, no rain. The humidity’s been low, which I suppose is a small blessing, but hot is hot no matter how much moisture saturates the air.

In fact, we could use some moisture. We need the rain. The grass is turning to straw. Even some of our young trees are wilting. That’s not good. The last rain we had was June 26, early morning.

And what does this mean to me? I've never liked extreme heat. Warm, I love; hot leaves something to be desired. Pregnancy compounds the discomfort. I’m just as cold-blooded as I ever was, but once it gets to the point where even I’m hot, I can’t handle the heat. It wears me out. It makes me nauseous. I sweat but feel no cooler. It's very uncomfortable. I have a new appreciation what all the complaining is about from those women who are very pregnant during the summer months. Yes, everyone is hot; but the pregnant woman cannot cope with the heat like she once did. I understand that now. It's overwhelming.

I'm not complaining simply because I'm pregnant. I'm only amazed at the new dimension a heat wave takes on during pregnancy. I can only imagine that it's a safety mechanism. It keeps me out of the heat, preventing me from suffering heat stroke or becoming dehydrated, both of which are dangerous to the baby. When you think about it, it's amazing how the human body works to keep you from doing stupid things.

Oh, we have 90 days to go as of today. How did that happen?

I hear you! I can't stand the heat, and neither can my poor little ankles, er, huge ankles now! AC is my new best friend! Stay cool!

Sorry the heat is making you feel so bad. I think you're probably right about it being a safety mechanism.
