Our poor, suffering dachshund survived another weekend of fireworks. Puppy girl is not a fan of bangs, booms, or cracks. The moment she hears anything resembling a firecracker, she high tails it (or low tails) back to the house. We haven't been able to walk her further than the cul-de-sac, and even that takes some doing.
I had fully intended to take her around the block last night after she took her potty break. The sun was finally setting, allowing the temperature to drop to moderately bearable levels (you can't walk a hairy, black dog in 90 degree heat). She did what she needed to do. Excellent. Before there was even the hint of a crackle in the air, she was headed back to the door.
Poor baby girl. I'm going to have to drag her around the block tonight. We had to do this last year, too, until she got used to the idea that fireworks weren't going to explode around her.
We learned on Sunday that several other dogs in the neighborhood have a problem with fireworks and thunder. One's a beagle mix and the other a coon hound. Both cower in some far corner of the house as does Sadie. But unlike the other two, Sadie does not have accidents. I cannot tell you how grateful we are for that.
I wish she had some of our cat's courage. Muggles has no problems at all. Who'd imagine a cat would have more courage than a dog? Aren't cats supposedly skittish? Well, yes, and Muggles is, too, but I've never had a cat who had a problem with fireworks or thunder . . . just the sweeper.

Benadryl and the crate helps my dog get though it....hahahaha
Sorry about the emotional trauma that the fireworks caused. I hope she gets over it soon.
We have a hound, and she hates fireworks, too. Except she doesn't get scared, she gets PISSED. She barks until she is basically hoarse and hyperventilating. We were going to get her a thundershirt (google it- sounds very neat!), but we didn't get around to it this year.
